Los Angeles — In response to today’s news that Trump nominated Amy Coney Barrett to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS), Action Center on Race and the Economy (ACRE) released the following statement:

“Trump’s nomination of Amy Coney Barrett  is a naked power grab by the conservative white supremacist Trump Administration,”  said ACRE Co-Executive Director Saqib Bhatti. “It is clear, the rights and freedoms of our families and communities are at stake. Especially for Black people, Muslim, Arab, and South Asian communities, women, queer and trans people, immigrants and anyone not white, male or classified as a corporation. The fact is, the civil rights of the majority of the people in the United States hang by a thread and now is the time to act boldly to protect them.”

“While the Court alone will never guarantee the safety of Black and Brown people, we are calling on Congressional Democrats to use every option at their disposal to obstruct Trump’s undemocratic nominee,” said Vasudha Desikan, Political Director. “Don’t let Senator Feinstein and the Democrats fool you. They have the power to stop this nomination. It’s going to take each of us, constituents, advocates and organizers to push Democrats to fight tooth and nail right now.”
