FACT CHECKER AND COPY EDITOR, ACTION CENTER ON RACE & THE ECONOMY

The Action Center on Race and the Economy (ACRE) drives campaigns that seek to win structural change by directly taking on the financial elite responsible for pillaging communities of color and working-class communities and harming our environment. Through partnerships with organizations involved in local racial, economic, environmental and educational justice campaigns, we provide strategic campaign coordination and campaign infrastructure with an explicit racial justice analysis.

The Fact Checker and Copy Editor will report to the Research Director in a cross-department role with the Digital Campaigns department. This role will work closely with other ACRE staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proofread and review research and other written content for factual accuracy
  • Ensure all stated facts are supported by reputable sources and properly cited
  • Determine that evidence for claims is thoroughly referenced
  • Raise questions with report author/s or legal review team
  • Provide peer to peer support to develop fact-checking skills and a peer review process
  • Final read and edit of written and graphic content and captions for spelling or grammatical errors prior to publication
  • Ensure content is consistent with ACRE’s internal style guide
  • Draft descriptive copy for ACRE reports, publications website and digital channels

Qualifications:

  • A strong commitment to progressive social change and racial justice, a familiarity with the issues that are central to ACRE’s work, and a passion for ACRE’s vision and mission
  • At least two years of fact-checking experience
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Strong critical thinking skills
  • The ability to stay organized and plan effectively
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately on tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments
  • Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks
  • Proficiency in Google and Microsoft Office programs
  • Basic database skills
  • A good sense of humor

Salary scale range  is $53k-$65k, based on experience. LGBTQ, women, and people of color strongly encouraged to apply. Location is flexible, but we prefer Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area, or Washington, DC. There is a 10% cost of living adjustment for people working in the New York City, Los Angeles, Bay Area, and DC metro areas. Position includes excellent benefits.
